Keke Palmer has taken a playful dig at her past relationship drama with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson in the music video for Usher’s latest track, “Boyfriend.”
The R&B icon, Usher, released the much-awaited video on Wednesday (August 16), which cleverly weaves in references to Palmer’s recent relationship woes while also paying homage to Usher’s early 2000s hits.
The video kicks off reminiscent of Usher’s 2001 classic “U Don’t Have To Call,” with Palmer gracefully moving in a white robe, prepping for a night at Usher’s concert. As the video progresses, Usher’s lyrics hint at a carefree attitude towards potential home-wrecking.
Usher’s lines, “Somebody said that your boyfriend’s looking for me/ Oh that’s cool, that’s cool/ Well he should know I’m pretty easy to find/ Just look for me wherever he sees you,” play over an upbeat, danceable track.
In a nostalgic twist, Palmer is seen in an elevator, singing along to Usher’s “U Remind Me.” The video then transitions to Palmer channeling Usher, mirroring his iconic attire and dance moves from “U Don’t Have to Call.” Usher soon joins the scene, donning a matching outfit set against a backdrop reminiscent of Sin City. The video concludes with a comedic twist as Palmer wakes up, realizing she dreamt the entire sequence and missed Usher’s concert. She humorously remarks, “Shit, I’m so tired! I’m a mother… after all,” referencing the criticisms from her ex-boyfriend.
Usher’s “Boyfriend” video, especially his serenade to Palmer during his Las Vegas residency in July, seems to have been the last straw for Darius Jackson.
PEOPLE reports that Jackson has decided to “move on” from Palmer, with whom he has a five-month-old child. Jackson had previously expressed his disapproval of Palmer’s attire at Usher’s Vegas show, criticizing her choice of a see-through dress, suggesting it wasn’t suitable for a mother. He tweeted, “It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom,” publicly voicing his discontent.
Despite facing backlash, Jackson stood firm on his viewpoint, further tweeting, “We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is. This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.”
